Travelling to Bali

Flights to Bali

Currently a small number of budget airlines fly into Bali from Asian airports, but only form Asia and Australia. Travellers from further afield and those who need a more traditional airline will need to travel with one of the major airlines. Travellers from Europe and the States can use bookers such as Ebookers to book flights at competetive rates. Be aware that Visa On Arival for up to 30 days costs US$25 and Departure Tax is currently IDR150,000 ($16/EUR11 approx). Longer tourist visas must be arranged before you travel at you local consulate.

The Airport

Bali has an international airport Ngurah Rai. Located to the South of Kuta it is more generally known as Denpasar. Two terminals serve the Indonesian domestic needs and international travel respectively. It is the gateway for most travellers from Asia, Europe, the Americas and Australia/New Zealand. There are a few flights directly into Denpasar from Australia and Asia. Most longer haul travellers will arrive via Jakarta(Soekarno-Hatta International Airport), Singapore, KL, or other Asian hubs.

Transport To and From the Airport

Ngurah Rai has all the facilities you would expect of an international airport although on a small scale. Fixed price taxis from the airport can booked from a booth to one side of the arrivals exit. Buy your ticket and board the next available taxi. You cannot drop off passengers from a prebooked taxi, so if you share, you must all be travelling to the same destination. Fixed price taxis from the airport save a lot of hassle. There will be many "tour guides" and touts outside as you leave ignore these unless you want to pay more. Some of the better hotels have their own complimentary airport pickup or you can arrange a pickup with you hotel/tour operator when you book. Booking before you go makes arrival much easier.

For trips to and from Lombok you will use the Padangbai ferry terminal. This is a little over an hour from the airport and about 3hrs 30 from Lovina with a fast driver. Arrivals from Java are between Gilimanuk in West Bali and Ketapang in Java. The ferries are frequent and take less than 30 minutes, but you might have to wait for hours at busy times. The ferries are pretty basic.

Buses and trains connect many parts of Java to the ferry and buses in Bali connect the ferry terminal to all parts of Bali.

Getting Around

You can easily get to Lovina by bus from all parts of Bali, but it is along ride from the East or South. Getting your own car with or without a driver (I don't recommend without!!) is a much easier way to get to the North. Bemos are the local public transport buses and they ply all the local routes. Again it is much easier to hire a driver and car for any longer journey. You can travel from Kuta in less than 3hrs and from the airport or Sanur in about 2.30hrs. You will travel through (Pura Ulun Danau), Bedugul and could go the pretty way through Munduk if you are not in a hurry. So you could stop to take in the temple, lakes and rice paddies on your trip and make a day of it. A cheaper alternative to your own driver is to to use a shuttle bus. These are really minibuses and they pick up and drop off a various points so travel times will be longer. However they are considerably cheaper and you will get to chat to other travellers, which is a real bonus.

Sightseeing trips are easy to organise either with drivers on the street or through your hotel.
